Pulled Over By Police? If you’re pulled over by the police, don’t panic. The police can stop you if they suspect you’ve broken any traffic laws or more serious crimes. These include a suspected DUI, reckless driving or disobeying simple traffic laws or a felony crime. No matter what you’ve done or are suspected of, you have rights. Here are some helpful tips on how to deal with a police stop. Remain Calm
It’s in your best interests to relax. You don’t want to say or do anything that will be used against you. Obey all of the officer’s commands and instructions. Failing to do so can cause you to be arrested and taken into custody. Speak in a calm and respectful tone. Address them as “officer” or by their last name, using the title “officer” first. And remember you have the right to remain silent. You don’t have to answer any questions other than your name. Notify the officer that you wish to contact your attorney. Remain in your Vehicle
Place your hands on the steering wheel, so the officer can see what you’re doing. They don’t know if you’re reaching for a weapon or attempting to flee the scene. Turn off the ignition and don’t exit your vehicle. The officer may see this as a sign of aggression or an attempt to flee the scene. If you’ve been stopped for a serious crime, turn off the ignition. This signals to the officer or officer’s that you’re planning to comply. And don’t attempt to conceal evidence. If caught in the act this evidence can and will be used against you. If you’re asked to exit your vehicle for a search, don’t resist. Continue to remain calm and follow the officer’s instructions. Produce Required Documents
You’re required to produce your driver’s license, proof of insurance and registration. Remember to stay in your car until the officer allows you to leave the scene. While they’re checking your information don’t move around in your car. Remain calm until the process is complete. Continue to use a respectful tone and attitude at all times If stopped, because of a suspected DUI…… 1. Remember you have the right to refuse a breathalyzer test. If you refuse you can be taken into custody and your license will be suspended. You’ll have 30 days to get a Department of Licensing hearing. This is where you can possibly get the suspension lifted.Attitude Matters Believe it or not your attitude is the number one deciding factor in getting a warning or a ticket. Most officers will tell you it compensates for 90% of their decision-making process. Keep the odds on your side! Night Stops
If you’re stopped at night, turn on the interior lights after turning off the ignition. Again, place your hands on the steering wheel and obey the officer’s commands and instructions.
